WOMEN
BUILD
Women building homes and hope for people in need!
Come
and join a wonderful and capable group of women who
will start construction on the fourth Women
Build house on February 9th. The house
is funded by the Palmetto Bluff Women and will be completed
and dedicated for a single father and his son on Father's
Day. Women Build
is a Habitat for Humanity International program that
encourages women to have fun and make a difference by
building homes and communities. Nearly 1,000 houses
have been built by women crews around the world. There
are many opportunities to volunteer (January through
May) such as being a builder, managing a registration
table, and providing food donations. If interested,
follow the steps above for volunteering on a build site,
and indicate that you are interested in the Women

time commitment may vary depending on urgency and necessity.

COLLEGIATE
CHALLENGE:
Each
year, Hilton Head Regional Habitat for Humanity participates
in Habitat for Humanity International's Collegiate Challenge.
This year more than 11,500 students have signed up to
participate at 235 Habitat locations across the country.
Through its 18-year history, Collegiate Challenge has
sent more than 139,000 students to build Habitat houses.
During this time, students have raised more than $11
million in donations to the program. This year alone,
Collegiate Challenge students will contribute $1.4 million
to help build homes. Our affiliate expects 165 students
to spend their week-long winter or spring breaks building
with us this year. Our volunteers enjoy working with
the students because of the great enthusiasm and energy
they bring to the work site. In 2007, our affiliate
will be hosting students from the following colleges:
Bowling
Green University
Elon College
Gettysburg
College
Lafayette
College
Michigan
Technological University
Oberbein
Skidmore
University
of Delaware
University
of Michigan
University
of Wisconsin (2 groups)
Local alumni often get together to host an event, such
as a pizza party or barbecue, for visiting students.
If you are interested in hosting an event, please contact
Lois Wilkinson at (843) 757-5864 or hfhvolunteers@habitathhi.org.

CARE-A-VANNER
PROGRAM:
Hilton
Head Regional Habitat for Humanity attracts additional
volunteers through Habitat for Humanity International's
Care-A-Vanner program. Members of the program
are RV owners who travel the country volunteering
their time at Habitat projects and helping to
accelerate and/or supplement ongoing building
projects. Our affiliate has enjoyed hosting Care-A-Vanners
from Maine, Michigan, Wisconsin, New York, Massachusetts,
Florida, Texas, and Minnesota as well as from
Canada. They follow our construction schedule
of working Tuesdays through Saturdays from 8:00
am until 3:00 pm and spend late afternoons
enjoying the area. Our experiences with these
generous people have been mutually rewarding.

GOLDEN
HAMMER AWARDS:
|
Each year in April, the Hilton Head Regional Habitat
for Humanity recognizes the many volunteers who
live the Habitat mission which is "to eliminate
substandard housing and homelessness and break the
cycle of poverty that inadequate housing fosters."
Each volunteer who gives 100 hours or more of their
time building houses, working for our Restore, or
helping with events, is awarded a "golden hammer."
This year, seventy-nine volunteers were recognized.
Our leading volunteer has worked 521 hours this
year, and we have four volunteers who have worked
over 400 hours and eight who have worked over 300
hours. On most working days at the Brendan Woods
Community in Bluffton, you can see at least thirty
area residents enjoying the camaraderie of building
houses together. |
